Summer Learning Loss
As we head towards the summer holidays, it's worth thinking about 'Summer Learning Loss', also called the 'Summer Slide'.
The data indicates that students' Maths scores decline most over the summer, in comparison to literacy skills. This is because parents and carers are more likely to read with their children than do Maths exercises with them over the summer. Where students do not have regular reading-focused activities over the summer, the loss is approximately one to two months.
This is not disastrous. A student will regain the skills they'd previously acquired over the first few weeks back, but will not progress beyond their previous level for that time.

I am fully DRB checked, have been a qualified teacher for twenty years, have worked as a GCSE examiner, and am still teaching at the 'coalface' in a school in London. I am a Subject Leader in English and Literacy and have worked on programs to improve outcomes for disadvantaged students. I have taught the full gamut of students, from those with serious speech and language development problems through to those undertaking the Oxbridge entry process.
My GCSE and A Level results are excellent, and I am fully conversant with recent developments in pedagogy including how to reduce the cognitive strain on students, how to push for deeper understanding and thinking, how to layer and repeat learning for retention, and how to build students' confidence.
